I have been slightly amused, but also a little saddened by the general ambivalence and the rather obvious cringe displayed by , politicians and other commentators on the death and funeral of Baroness Thatcher.
She was a thorn in the side of many, she was a seriously flawed individual, but she was the elected leader of a political party in the free world, who became the first female prime minister in, what was at the time, a heavily male dominated UK.
The feminist commentators have had field days and bun fights over the years, true liberals, trade unionists, socialists and rank and file labour supporters have raged and ranted, “myself among them booming with the worst.”
Thatcher was hard, sometimes cruel and ill informed, but she had a mission , she was the woman at the top (first among equals) and she made no bones about what she intended to achieve.
Before she was eventually ousted by her own party ( maybe too late) she managed, amongst the ruins, to achieve a palpable amount of good.
As I listened to our own first female prime minister the other night, I found myself wishing that she had displayed a little more dignity in the wake of the passing of a great political figure and a former prime minister; male or female, right or left of the political spectrum.
