ABC misses the moment. Again
When it comes to breaking news, it would seem that the ABC can’t catch a break.
Having taken a kicking over the broadcaster’s slow reaction to the Japanese earthquake disaster, all ABC News Radio needed to do in covering the Rupert Murdoch hearing at the UK’s Parliament was to continue to broadcast it. Which would seem a relatively low bar. But…
At some point after the two hour mark, for reasons best known to themselves, the ABC decided to cut back to the studio to discuss what had taken place so far. Within a few seconds came the moment of drama when the protester attacked Murdoch. The ABC presenter was reduced, somewhat inadequately, to spluttering that something had happened but they didn’t know what.
Dr Mumbo had to tune in to the Murdoch-founded Sky News to find out.
Quel surprise. The problem with the ABC is that they’ve become CNN. Not content to report the news, they’ve decided to elevate their “personalities”, and to do so they must allow them to take time out of actual, um, news, to give us their spin on news.
Their 24 hour news channel is similarly CNN’nd. Endless bloody lifestyle health and business shows, and opinion from countless twits, instead of actual news. Hopeless.
Al Jazeera is the only decent television news outfit at the moment.

I never had a problem with ABC’s coverage?

In Adelaide Channel 10, 9 & 7 all were at different points in the telecast & all purporting to be live. I think only Channel 9 was.

Same In Sydney, NewsRadio dropped the ball – grhhh.
So I tuned in to 2RPH, which also broadcasts BBC WS after 11. My memory that the BBC had stopped its live broadcast, in favour of one of its “lets summarise what’s happened” segments with a couple of media wonks. Turned the radio off, rolled over, went to sleep.

The ABC has decided to get all hip and edgy.
Along the way it has fired a lot of senior staff but more importantly a lot of irreplacable TV industry knowledge.
We are now witnessing that lack of knowledge and experience. The dumbing down then final destruction of the ABC as a credible media organisation.
