AFP launches iPad app

News service Agence France Press has launched an iPad app.

The announcement:

AFP is launching its iPad application in English at the annual conference of the Online News Association; a new offering, free of charge, providing access to a selection of fast, accurate news from around the world.

Access news in real time direct from the application’s homepage with links to the latest stories with videos and pictures. From the homepage, users can navigate to an overview of international events with “World News” as well as to regional close-ups in “Asia News”, “Middle East”, and “Africa”, or you can go directly to other topics like “Sports” “Culture” “People” and “Earth and Science” — 15 sections in all.

A breaking news ticker scrolls continuously on a band located on the top of the screen.

Dive into the heart of the news through the best images of the day in captioned video and photo galleries, providing context in the blink of an eye. Five photo galleries present the best images of the day and selections of striking pictures on sports, fashion and the offbeat.

To go further, AFP offers another view of the world through a magazine section specially conceived for iPad by the AFP multimedia department.

Two sections with stories, photos, videos and graphics provide:

– Feature Stories: AFP’s take on the world today, with items on society, fashion and the arts

– Analysis: deciphering the events making the news.

Some of this content is also available on the iPhone application launched by AFP in January 2010 in 5 languages (English, Spanish, Portuguese, German and Arabic). iPad applications in Spanish and Portuguese will be launched in November.

AFP is also developing a series of on-demand themed photo applications dedicated to key events, highlights of the year, or the greats of history. The first, available in the next few weeks, will be “Eye on a New Century”, a compendium of the Agency’s best photos from the first decade of the XXI Century (price: $ 3.99).

With the launch of these applications and others in the future for mobile platforms, AFP is consolidating its presence on the mobile market, a key priority in the months and years ahead.
