Bait 3D makes $20m at Chinese box office

Australian Singapore co-production Bait 3D, a sharksploitation disaster film continues its strong run at the Chinese box office, taking nearly $20m with over 2.77m tickets purchased. The film is ranked number one and its success has meant the producers have already announced a second.

BAIT 3D, which first screened publicly to enthusiastic audiences who gave the film standing ovations at sold out screenings at the Venice Film Festival is now taking a bite out of international box offices since its recent releases in Italy, the US, Australia, The Netherlands, Kuwait, Malaysia, Russia and especially China.

The film is currently ranked #1 (for the week of October 15-21) in China and has taken in nearly $20M since its premiere in the region 10 days ago and made over $10M last week alone. There have been over 2,770,000 tickets purchased.

“BAIT 3D’s popularity in China is absolutely thrilling and we couldn’t be more pleased,” said producer Gary Hamilton. “The film has outperformed a number of big studio projects by far and audiences throughout this country and around the world are enthusiastically purchasing tickets and enjoying the ride that BAIT 3D delivers.”

The film’s next theatrical releases will be in Singapore, Latin America and Germany with other territories close behind.

As recently announced, BAIT 2 is currently in development and will be presented byArclight Films at AFM during the first week of November.

BAIT 3D features a stellar ensemble cast including Xavier Samuel (The Twilight Saga; Eclipse, Sanctuary, A Few Best Men), Julian McMahon (Fire with Fire, Nip/Tuck, Fantastic Four) Sharni Vinson (You’re Next, Blue Crush 2, Step Up 3D), Phoebe Tonkin (Secret Circle, Tomorrow When the War Began), Martin Sacks (The Cup, Underbelly), Alice Parkinson (The Cup, Sanctum), Dan Wyllie (The Hunter, Animal Kingdom) Alex Russell (Chronicle, Wasted on the Young), Lincoln Lewis (Underbelly, Tomorrow When the War Began) Cariba Heine (Blood Brothers, The Pacific) and high profile Singaporean stars Qi Yuwu (The Home Song Stories, Founding Of A Party) and Adrian Pang (Holiday, I Do I Do).

BAIT 3D is directed by Kimble Rendall, written by Russell Mulcahy and John Kim and produced by Gary Hamilton, Todd Fellman and Peter Barber. Executive Producers are Chris Brown, Ian Maycock, Mike Gabrawy, Ying Ye and Russell Mulcahy.

Arclight Films is handling sales worldwide for both BAIT 3D and BAIT 2 in 3D.
