Caroline Overington steps back from Oz Media Diary
The Australian’s Media Diary editor Caroline Overington is to switch roles, becoming a writer on the relaunched Weekend Australian magazine.
Her new role starts in three weeks’ time. Mumbrella understands that no replacement has yet been appointed.
I can confirm that.
I’ve loved doing Media Diary, but we are re-launching the Weekend Australian Magazine in a new, larger format, and when a role opened up for a writer … I ran half-way across the office to try to secure it.
I shall miss you, Tim.

Is it just me or has The OZ’s Media section gone downhill lately? And in all truth found Overington’s column too ornery and gossipy.

Ha. I would have thought someone needed a break from Media Diary. The last few entries vis-à-vis crikey have been a little embarrassing for a national paper.

Here we go again! This thing has had more relaunches than the space shuttle. It faded away to irrelevence under the last couple of editors when the budget and staff were slashed to the bone but new girl in charge, Christine Middap, is rumoured to be a big favourite of John Hartigan and therefore Oz editor Chris Mitchell – and so it seems the money tap has suddenly been turned on again. The truth is the newspaper magazines, both from News and Fairfax, have never recovered from the GFC and these days are as skinny as a Somalian refugee in search of a feed. Oh, well, let’s reinvent the wheel … again.
