ABC appoints Catherine McGrath as Asia editor

The political editor of the Australian Network, Catherine McGrath, has been appointed as the editor for the Asia region in a new role which will see her contributing to the ABC domestically and to the government-funded Australia Network and Radio Australia internationally.

McGrath will be part of the ABC’s Melbourne-based Asia Pacific News Centre.

The appointment was announced internally today. In an email to staff sent out by Tim Ayliffe, ABC’s TV news editor and acting head of content, said: “As part of the recent changes at APNC, I am delighted to announce that Catherine McGrath will take up the new role of Asia editor.

“This ABC-wide role is dedicated to explaining developments in Australia’s relations with Asia in the Asian Century. It is a multiplatform role that demands a thorough understanding of foreign and trade policy and an ability to contextualise issues. This is a revised role for Cath, though she will still be committed to the analysis she provides Newsline.

“Cath is widely acknowledged for her expertise in this area, developed over decades. Cath will join Jim Middleton in playing a leading role in explaining Australia’s role in the Asian Century to Australian audiences.”
