ACMA launches new digital citizenship campaign

ACMAMedia watchdog the Australian Communications and Media Authority has launched an online campaign to promote good digital citizenship.

The campaign which includes an online “guide to positive engagement” and a YouTube video which aims to show young people “What we do can have a big influence on everyone else.”

“There has been a feeling for some time, in the field, that it would be good to have some clarity about the principles that we are all working towards and that ACMA was the perfect body to act in that role,” said Richard Bean deputy chair of the Australian Communications and Media Authority.

“We have many years of experience in the cyber safety field and have been creating our material with the principles of digital citizenship in mind.”

The video at the centre of the campaign was created by Great Southern Communications. The agency last year won international educational awards for work on the issue of being” tagged for life.”

“We engaged Southern Cross Communications who we’ve used before and their work on online tagging was very good ,” said Bean.

The campaign comes after cyber bullying became a major a media issue with outlets such as The Daily Telegraph running campaigns to “stop the trolls” on social media platforms such as Twitter.

Deputy chair of the ACMA Bean said that while cyber bullying would always be a reality the authority believe education would be able to help people address the issue.

“We can absolutely address this issue and helping young people to grow up to be good digital citizens is direct at exactly that but it is also a fact of human nature that there are bullies in the world and while they are in the playground they are also on Facebook as well,” he said.

“What we are aiming to do with this campaign is encourage people to act positively about it. Rather than scaring them, it is acknowledging these things are a fact of life and asking how do we deal with it?”
