Alex Hayes joins Mumbrella team

alex hayesFormer B&T Editor Alex Hayes is to join the Mumbrella team from Monday as one of three new members of staff.

Hayes’ first role will be to work on a major project currently being carried out by Mumbrella’s sister title The Source.

He will work alongside The Source’s publisher Camille Alarcon on the content for one day events to be held in Melbourne and Sydney in which agencies’ most respected practitioners share tips on the key aspects of what it takes to create and run a great agency. Hayes and Alarcon will curate the content of the events.

Hayes will also be involved in the publication of The Agency Review book, which will offer a comprehensive review of Australia’s top 50 creative and media agencies. The book will be published to coincide with the November events.

After completing The Agency Review project, Hayes will take charge of the Mumbrella newsdesk with editor Tim Burrowes shifting off the daily newsdesk into a role overseeing online and event content.

Before his two years on B&T, Hayes spent four years working on newspapers in the UK.

His arrival also coincides with that of Miranda Ward, who has joined the Mumbrella team as a reporter after two years as a digital producer with Sky News. Prior to that, Ward worked as a journalist for trade press financial publisher Conexus Financial.

Also joining the team in recent days is sales support executive is Kath Solly, who is her final period of study at UNSW for a Bachelor of Media.

Mumbrella also says goodbye to creative director Cathie McGinn, who departed yesterday for a new opportunity. McGinn curated this month’s Festival of Branded Entertainment after launching it a year ago, and also created last year’s CommsCon PR and communications conference. Prior to that role, McGinn was a journalist with Mumbrella and before that strategy director at Mindshare.

Mumbrella editor-in-chief Burrowes said: “We’re delighted to see Alex join us. In my view, he’s the best trade press editor currently in the market. He’ll add a great deal of firepower to our ability to set the news agenda.

“It’s also a sad day for us with Cathie’s departure. Her contribution and support for Mumbrella began long before she joined us as a member of staff, and I hope the association will go on long after she leaves us.”

McGinn has agreed to sit on the advisory boards for both the Festival of Branded Content & Entertainment, and for CommsCon. Her next role will be revealed shortly.
