Australian Geographic and Tourism Australia partner for travel special

Australian Geographic and Tourism Australia have partnered for a 2021 Covid travel special edition, Australia’s Quiet Places.

The announcement:

At a time when domestic travel is booming, as a consequence of Covid, Australian Geographic has partnered with Tourism Australia to produce a special edition that reveals the nation’s best-kept secret locations across all states and territories.

The collaboration highlights the hidden gems on our roads less travelled, expanding tourism into many places that will no doubt welcome a boost to local economies.

Called “Australia’s Quiet Places” the 148-page special showcases our regions, islands, wild encounters, walks and road trips. There’s also an ‘Adventurers and Dreamers’ wall map of Australia, as added inspiration.

“We have been encouraging Aussies to explore their own backyard for decades, and during that time we’ve seen Australia open-up and become so much more within our reach,” notes Australian Geographic Editor-in-Chief Chrissie Goldrick.

“And with this special edition we have consciously avoided urban areas and tourist hotspots, preferring instead to focus on lesser-known regional and remote gems, and the unique communities that help make them so special.

Australian Geographic Managing Director, Jo Runciman, says it has been a productive joint project. “The team at Australian Geographic are delighted to have been able to collaborate with Tourism Australia on this special initiative. The result is a beautiful but practical guide to Australia’s hidden gems and plays perfectly to what Australian Geographic and TA do best – which is to celebrate Australia and to inspire exploration and discovery.”

Tourism Australia Managing Director, Phillipa Harrison, said it was a privilege to explore the tourism opportunities Australia has on its doorstep.

“In our vast and varied backyard, Australians are spoilt for choice when it comes to new destinations to visit and experiences to have. Part of what is so awe-inspiring about our country is its scale. From our iconic outback to our world-class beaches there are countless ways to enjoy the unique elements of Australia’s food, culture and natural beauty. It’s a wonderful opportunity to work with Australian Geographic to showcase some of these elements.”

  • With most international travel banned, Australians are exploring their own country like never before – but many continue to gravitate towards the hot spots that they know. “Australia’s Quiet Places” gives them the information they need, as well as the desire, to pursue the road slightly less travelled.
  • AUSTRALIAN GEOGRAPHIC has been shining a light all over Australia, including into our most remote areas, for over 36 years now, through world class storytelling and photography. And always underpinned by a genuine love for this amazing country.
  • “Australia’s Quiet Places” details not just how to get there, but what to see and do to make the most of your visit.
  • The special edition is now on sale at newsagents, supermarkets and www.australiangeographic.com.au/shop
