Clever Buoy picks up Internet of Things awards at SXSW Innovation

M&C Saatchi’s Clever Buoy picked up another award yesterday as one of only two non-Americans to win at the SXSW Innovation Awards.

The project for Optus, which saw the Sydney agency develop a buoy which detects sharks and sends a signal back to the beach to warn people of their presence, was awarded in the coveted Internet of Things category at the ceremony in Austin, Texas.

It has won awards including the Innovation Grand Prix at the Spikes Festival last year, and at the Kinsale Sharks.

The award for improving music went to Cone, a portable speaker which connected to Rdio, whilst a device to detect skin cancer in a non-invasive manner won in the health category.

Artificial intelligence pioneer Martine Rothblatt was named as the best speaker at the conference, whilst the Ice Bucket Challenge for ALS was named Meme of the Year.
