Compare and contrast…
Ever wondered about the difference between commercial television and public service television?
10pm last night was a moment of exquisite contrast.
On ABC1? The most expensive outside broadcast of Q&A in the show’s history, live from North East Arnhem Land in the Northern territory, with an all indigenous panel.
And on Nine? My Granny The Escort – a series described by B&T magazine as “a frank insight into the lifestyle of women who, in their later years, turn to the sex industry for work”. And described by Dr Mumbo as “a prurient piece of British tabloid TV”.

And Australia’s metro TV audiences? They (narrowly) opted for Q&A, by 471,000 to 458,000.
Which pleases ABC boss Mark Scott…
Not to mention how many (eg me) watched QandA on 24 then tuned in for My granny… later.

Well Offal … your would count as ‘As Live” and be included in the ‘Overnight’ ratings (as reported here) but not to the ‘Live’ ratings. All’s good.

Did we actually get value for the cost of Q&A last night? The cost per 1000 viewers must have been horrendous.

The ABC can run expensive outside broadcasts to justify their budgets. The main thing is by stacking panels with Aboriginal guests, which is fair enough due to the location, nobody will ever question the cost. It is a touchy subject in reality. it is fair enough though that the Libs want to make the ABC more accountable by privatising some of the ABC operations.
