Copycat Kyle?
Remember how Nine’s Rescue Special Ops ripped off a Discovery Networks Bear Grylls promo?
The copycatastrophe appears to be spreading if Seven’s new promo for X Factor is anything to go by.
It certainly seems quite similar to this bronze Film Lion-winning piece by DDB France which Mumbrella wrote about last month.
Still, it does raise an interesting question: would you rather die of lung cancer or watch Kyle Sandilands?
Subtle much?
It was all going so well until Kyle appeared.
That’s easy – I’ll take the painful death.
Yes it’s shameless, even if it’s not a near carbon-copy like the Special Ops one.
However, as Ch 7 would well know, most of their audience won’t have seen the original ad. I don’t think there’s any correlation between people who know what a Cannes Lion is and people who watch X Factor, so they’re probably quite safe there.
I’m going to assume your last question was rhetorical, as you really shouldn’t make light of such a serious issue, Tim. People suffer and die that way frequently, even if it is self-inflicted. But for what it’s worth, who would want the absolute agony – not to mention the emotional trauma caused to family members and those you’re living with – or the indignity of dying in such an excruciating way as watching Kyle Sandilands?
I’m here all week, try the veal.
I’d rather watch Kyle, of course, but you’re right – it’s a direct rip off of the other vid. The researchers have obviously come across it and thought: “This will save us thinking and we’ll still get paid”.
Watching Kyle Sandilands can give you lung cancer, I’m told.
Is it Kyle’s fault he appeared in an ad rip off… shouldn’t we be throwing knives at Natalie Icantspellherlastnameia and the other meat puppets that appear in this shameless rip off. Or should we just blame Ch7 and the production company that made this wax replica?
Lit up a cigarette just as I finished the last line. Think that is a pretty strong signal of my leanings.
Agree it’s a blatant copycat ad, but the evolution/chance story is a lot more relevant with X Factor than an anti-smoking campaign.
lung cancer
I think there’s a very strong correlation between people who know what a Cannes Lion is and people who watch the X Factor, or they certainly share certain characteristics……
FYI, good Dr. PlayStation dudes played this one well after NZ’s TV3 ‘borrowed’ their creative: http://blog.us.playstation.com.....w-zealand/
Sorry Eli, I don’t get how the X Factor is more suited to the concept that it’s a billion to one chance that you’re alive – don’t blow it by killing yourself.
How many morons does it take to host a talent show…….?
