Daily Telegraph to hike subscription prices

The Daily Telegraph has followed fellow News Corp paper, The Australian, and Nine’s Sydney Morning Herald by increasing its subscription prices.

From October 18, the price of a digital subscription will change to $8 per week, up from $5 a week – making this a 37.5% price hike.

According to an email to subscribers, the increase is “to ensure we provide you with an unmatched news experience”

“We aim to keep our prices as low as possible and appreciate that cost pressures are being felt by all Australian households and we do not take this decision lightly,” the email continued.

This follows on from last week’s announcement The Australian is increasing the cost of its digital subscription plans from $8 per week to $11 a week, a decision the paper’s editor-in-chief, Michelle Gunn, also said wasn’t taken lightly “given the cost pressures being felt by Australian households”.

Nine Publishing announced a similar price hike for the Sydney Morning Herald in June. The Herald increased pricing for a digital subscription with two weekend papers from $36.80 to $43.20 per month.

Mumbrella has reached out to News Corp to ask whether the company plans to increase pricing for any of its other subscription offering.
