Flashmob. Again
It’s been several days since Sydney last saw a Flashmob to plug some kind of product.
Fortunately PowerBar has come to the rescue.

These flashmobs that happen in uncrowded areas just look pathetic.

I’m no ad guy, but this strikes me as a singular lack of creativity.
Two years ago when this was being done for the first ads it was used for it had a hint of clever about it, but even then, it was well preceded by the antics of folk like Improv Everywhere.
Now, it just shows no original thinking.

Nunchucks and littering. What?

Well, it actually LOOKS like they are just random people pulled from Martin Place (Sydney) – it would probably help the whole ‘art’ of the flash mob (which needs a bit of a rest, don’t you think) if the dancers are all AMAZING… and can actually dance and keep in time? Just saying!

just hope the kids who picked up all the bars don’t eat them at once!

So many interesting spaces and places in Sydney and they choose boring old Martin Place.

A bit of a fail there really…did they pick up the mess afterwards?

Hope this one signals the end of the “flash mob” era.

It didn’t break new ground – it wasn’t at a sexy location – it wasn’t a bastion of creativity – and it clearly doesn’t have the approval of our advertising/marketing echo chamber BUT I don’t think that matters in this instance. They had a crowd watching, they clearly made the most of the school hols and had some kids involved from a dance school, their support team was working the crowd and it appeared to be engaging for those who were there.
Quite frankly for all its faults I think it has more going for it than some of the lame twitter “experiences” that have been spruiked in the last 12 months. It might not be as cutting edge and hip but that’s not a bad thing all the time.
ps- I have nothing to do with the brand or the agencies involved. Mumbles knows me and my IP well 😉

Why do all flashmobs have to involve dancing? You could have so much more fun with Powerbar than a dance to an old (great) Basement Jaxx track.
Turn Martin place into a gym with over stuffed body suits.. A bunch of “officeworkers” simultaneous rip off suits to reveal Power Bar uniforms and then run around handing out freebies to everyone… I could go on, but i don’t get paid for these “ideas”.

35 people well reached.
Good effort.

We need to set up some kind of flash mob spoiler response team. When we, the collective group of industry professionals, hear of a flash mob, we need to send people into the middle of the activity and just stand there. Or dance badly. Or strip naked. Or fall down very hurt and screaming. Anything that is likely to disrupt the whole thing and make it watchable.
Like photo bombing en masse.
And it would be even more amazing if our super heros were adorned in branded costumes. Imagine if a bunch of Ronald McDonald look alikes raided this mob. Now that would be something I’d like to watch.

I agreee with everything said here.
what a waste of money.

This stuff was being done 10 years ago. It’s just brands have realised it.

@PruQ – I agree with your comments 100%. Yes it’s been done before. Yes the link with the product is tenuous and the location has been done to death but…on the bright side, it did seem to be engaging for the crowd and I bet this was done on a very limited budget…It might not win the Golden Target Award but it’s not bottom of the heap either.
Disclaimers: I have no association with the brand or the agency that brought this stunt together.

You people need to leave these mobbers alone? Yes it has been done alot, but so what? Is it hurting anybody? Is it costing you?
What does this even affect you?
Were you there? Did you participate? No??
Then shut up.
@the ref: If youre going to put together a flashmob spoiler group, then that just shows how lame you are.
I dont agree with flashmobs trying to sell products, thats just wrong. Mobs were created to do weird spontaneous things. But i’m an avid supporter of Flashmobs, I have a group of 900 mobbers ready to flash in Sydney. And i’m not associated with this company. We havent flashed in a whole year, and those who flashmob are those who are new to it and really excited.
But having attended more than 10, i can tell, you its all about the Thrill aboout dancing in public and being watched by random people.
You all, go participate in a mob and you’ll see.
