Future for young Aussie journos looks bright as Cardinal Pell is given column by The Australian

Dr Mumbo was inspired to see 81-year-old Ballarat local Cardinal George Pell has proven critics of cancel culture wrong by having his first column printed in Saturday’s The Weekend Australian.

The high-profile member of the Catholic Church’s byline appeared in the weekend edition of The Australian this past Saturday gone, with the headline reading: ‘Sustaining our liberal ideals the best hope in dark times’ (subscription only).

Dr Mumbo, like many Aussie journos had to work hard to get their words printed by an Australian media outlet, so it’s curious what makes this bloke so special that his thoughts on what “youngsters” need to be shown should be made public across the nation.

The article, which The Australian notes is “an edited extract of Cardinal George Pell’s recent address to Campion College” appeared in both print and online editions of the paper.

With such bright and progressive insights on religion, society, culture, climate change, and China, Dr Mumbo wonders why it has taken so long for this budding journo to find a regular column in one of the country’s national titles?

Grace Tame, activist and 2021 Australian of the Year had a few choice words to share on Twitter over the weekend after seeing Pell’s byline crop up.

Whatever you think of Pell and his past, it is great to see unity below the line on the article, a searing endorsement for Pell which no doubt he will be heartened by.
