Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters tops Australian box office

A reworking of one of The Grimm Brothers’ fairytales has taken top spot at the Australian Box Office over the weekend.

Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters made $2.217m in its opening week, according to Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia.

Opening across 334 screens the Paramount Pictures-distributed film had a screen average of $6,638.

The film sees the adult brother and sister duo who become witch hunters following their childhood encounter with the evil witch.

The film is directed by Dead Snow’s Tommy Wirkola and stars Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arteton as Hansel and Gretel.

Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln was also released in local cinemas over the weekend.

Distributed by Fox, the film opened across 206 screens for $1.335m and a screen average of $6,482.

Also in cinemas is Movie 43 featuring 14 different vignettes from different directors and a huge celebrity cast, distributed by Roadshow. The comedy made $556,800 in its first weekend across 145 screens for a $3840 average.

Director Joe Wright’s Anna Karenina made $174,000 in pre-release screenings across 119 screens.

It was a reasonably quiet week in total for the top 20 films, earnings were just $11.619m.

Two Bollywood films opened in limited release this weekend. Special 26, distributed by Saggi made $87,000 across 11 screens for a $7,889 average while ABCD (Any Body Can Dance), distributed by Mindblowing Films made $33,000 across 14 screens fort a $2,378 average.

Also in release is European film Elles, released a year ago in France. Distributed by Palace, it made $36,000 across 9 screens for a $3,996 average.
