The Hitman’s Bodyguard kicks American Made off top spot at weekend box office

Samuel Jackson and Ryan Reynolds’ new film, The Hitman’s Bodyguard, knocked American Made off the top spot at weekend box office, after just one week.

Debuting on August 31, the film is centred on a bodyguard and an assassin who are thrown together for 24 hours.

In its first weekend, the film earned $2.330m across 313 screens.

Since its premiere four days ago, it has collected more than $3m in earnings.

In second place was Tom Cruise action film, American Made, which made just over $1.5m this weekend, compared to last week’s $2.139m.

In total, the Universal film has made $4.484m.

Another new film in cinemas over the weekend was Universal’s Girl Trip, starring Queen Latifah, which ranked third, according to the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia.

Girl’s Trip reported $1.303m in earnings, bringing its total to $1.419m.

The film features four friends who travel to New Orleans for the annual Essence Festival.

Sliding to fourth was Dunkirk, which has now made $22.543m since its July premiere.

Over the weekend, it obtained $563,115.

Fifth was Annabelle: Creation, collecting $536,237 over the weekend, across 212 screens.
