International Advertising Association looking for adland’s next big thing

The International Advertising Association has opened entries in its national marketing communications competition for university and tertiary students.

IAA BIG IDEA 2024 is open to undergraduate students in marketing, advertising, media, and communications courses in universities and tertiary institutions, with registrations at iaabigidea.com.au.

Students are invited to devise a marketing communications campaign for a ‘real-world’ client, this year Volvo Cars, working in agency-style teams to “develop a fully integrated communications solution for a ‘real-life’ project”.

This year’s project sees students tasked with delivering an end-to-end plan — from the research stage to the creative concept, through to the final presentation — for Volvo Cars, reflecting the company’s purpose:  “For Life.  Freedom to move in a personal, sustainable and safe way.”

Volvo Cars is delighted to participate in the IAA ‘Big Idea’ 2024,” Julie Hutchinson, Volvo’s marketing director, said.

“What a fantastic opportunity for us to gain insights about our brand from some of Australia’s brightest strategic thinkers. Best of luck to the various teams and we eagerly await their ‘Big Ideas.'”

Heather Leembruggen, chair of IAA Australia, who has steered the annual competition since its inception in 2003, added the BIG IDEA “provides hundreds of undergraduate students all over Australia with lots of scope for innovative ideas, critical thinking and creative solutions”.

“The IAA BIG IDEA national challenge offers undergraduate students the opportunity to follow their stars into the marcoms industry by sharpening their communication skills and talents in a real world, hands-on, career-ready learning experience that is essential career training in the preparation of graduates for the transition from university into professional practice,” she said.

“IAA BIG IDEA gives students the chance to put their learnings into practice as it is designed to foster the talents of the upcoming generation of communications professionals, in line with the IAA’s ongoing commitment to professional development”.
