Kia campaign highlights the ‘uncomfortable moments’
Car maker Kia has launched a new television campaign for its Cerato built around the idea of avoiding life’s “uncomfortable moments”.
The first ad, which is one of three to be rolled out in coming weeks, features a couple on a date when the male receives a call from a woman who he is meeting later.
Rather than reacting badly the woman in the car says they’ll skip desert in order for him to make his 10pm date. The ad finishes with the tagline: “So many features, there’s never an uncomfortable moment.”
The ads were created by in-house advertising agency Innocean Worldwide Australia.
Earlier this year Kia launched a commercial – also by Innocean – which focused on the “modern man” and “modern woman”.
It’s actually pretty good! The ending with “she sounds nice” – “She’s far from nice” is the best part! Good work Innocean (for once).

incredible car advertising.

gross. another example of a man being a ‘player’ which is completely acceptable. i’d like to know the reaction if a woman was the driver. also, another example of a less than attractive man scoring a far more attractive woman. harsh, but true. *dislike*

And the selling point is????

@ Kate – it’s all in the perception. How do you know it’s not his sister / work-business partner (for a dinner meeting) or just a friend of his?
Plus picking someone up for dinner and telling them they look beautiful isn’t exactly what I would call “scoring”.
(Personally, I like to think of it as a date though.) What seems immoral to some people, may be seen as a lifestyle of freedom by others – including women.

So the two Innocean creatives have jumped on with some positive comments!
How can this be amazing?
It’s clearly supposed to be funny – but isn’t.
I had to rewind the ad when I saw it and watch it several times before I even understood it.

Written by men, for men?!
Or, simply written for players (both men and women)?
Sorry, not a fan.

Also had to replay it several times… Why? The punch line was so weak I couldn’t believe thats all there was too it… Lacks relevance but most of all humour! WEaaaak

I saw this on TV the other night and laughed.
Good job in a generally mundane category. Starting to build a bit of a Kia personality too.

Amazed at Amazed… little bitter? Simple ad, quirky, loosely provocative, engaging.
Ps. not an Innocean creative… independent comment!

Consistent with Kia’s cringe worthy, misogynistic ad style. don’t understand it. agree with ella. if this ad is designed to isolate women, they’ve nailed it. also completely unfunny.

What a tasteless campaign suggesting, promoting and trivilising infidelity. What values is KIA promoting to the next generation? What a failure in marketing both ruining your brand, your long term reputation as a company and being a terrible example for corporate social responsibility – millions of innocent kids and young people are subjected to watch this while watching their favorite family shows in the afternoon and early evenings. Steve Watt do yourself and us a favour and pull the campaign!

I have been scratching my head also wondering where I have seen the girl in the ad. Hopefully someone can help.

Wow some people need to chill out a bit.
It’s generally acceptable that when people are quite clearly and obviously DATING that there is a unique exception socially in which it is temporarily OK to look around a bit and possibly even be “fading one partner out as you fade another in”.
I don’t know anyone, male or female, that would demand complete and utter devotion prior to the arrival of a first dinner-date.
They do push a touch further in that the car owner appears to be intimately engaged with the incoming caller, but clearly the phase that all three people are in can easily be seen as the “I am by no means married” phase.
Take a chill pill! 🙂

To Curious – the actor is Racheal from Home and Away. She played the Doctor who was married to the now more famous Chris Hemsworth.

Umm, guys, this is advertising. Last time I checked, Kia are under no obligation to hold up someone else’s shining moral compass. Their job is to sell more cars. Does the ad help do that? We’ll see.
