Liverpool match drives TV viewers towards 7Mate

Sports fans again showed willingness to find coverage on the secondary free to air channels on Wednesday night with 7Mate pulling one of its biggest audience shares since launch for the Melbourne Victory vs Liverpool FC soccer game.

7Mate had an audience of 8.4 per cent while the game had a metro audience of 588,000, according to the overnight ratings from OzTAM. In Melbourne the game rated 262,000 – making it the city’s ninth most watched programme of the day.

The strong result matches the big results for Nine’s Gem during the first two Ashes cricket tests.

Meanwhile, Nine’s The Block was the only evening entertainment show to rate more than 1m, pulling in 1.359m.

Nine News won the 6pm battle with 1.359m viewers to Seven News’ 1.284m.

And Nine’s A Current Affair (1.139m) beat Seven’s Today Tonight (1.075m).

Seven’s best performer during the evening was Criminal Minds with 810,000 viewers.

Ten’s best showing came from Masterchef which rated 737,000. it was 12th for the night in all people and eighth in the network’s target demographic of 25-54.

Ten’s new show This Week Live debuted at 9.30pm with a metro audience of 341,000. It also won the timeslot among the 25-54 audience.

Nine topped the evening’s share with 21.7 per cent,  ahead of Seven’s 18.2 per cent. Ten had a 12.9 per cent share and ABC1 12.6 per cent.
