Media Federation: we need ABC and SBS to keep the big boys in check

A separate ABC and SBS are needed to keep the big three commercial players honest, the Media Federation of Australia says in its submission to the government on the future of the public broadcasters.

The MFA, which represents Australian media agencies, tells the government in its comments released today: “Whilst there is a slight deterioration of television audiences over the years through a shift to other media, the audience numbers attracted by television will always be significant. Creating healthy competition in this sector is critical to ensure all broadcasters continue to be challenged by provided better viewing experiences to their audiences.

“Additionally, it must be noted that there are only three major players who control the vast majority of revenue so to maintain competition is also economically important for our industry.”

The MFA concludes: “Having two public broadcasters in the market also fills a need in the market and both SBS and the ABC both should be preserved in their current context.”
