Melbourne radio ratings: Smooth FM topples Fox FM in total audience share
Smooth FM has become the most-listened-to FM radio station in Melbourne with a 1.3 percentage point gain putting it at 11% of the overall market, over Fox FM’s 9.6% in the second radio ratings release of the year.
Fox FM dropped 0.8 percentage points from 10.4% last survey. The station also saw a 1.5 percentage point drop for Fifi Box, Brendan Fevola and Byron Cooke’s breakfast show to 8.7%, and a 0.9 percentage point drop to 10.6% in drive.
The falls mean the Fifi, Fev and Byron show is no longer in the lead in the FM breakfast market.
The drive slot – with Carrie Bickmore and Tommy Little, followed by Kate Langbroek and Dave Hughes – still holds the most popular FM drive spot, but it now only has a 0.4 percentage point edge over Gold’s Gavin Miller who saw a 1.0 percentage point jump to 10.2%.
Comparatively, Smooth’s breakfast duo of Jennifer Hansen and Mike Perso jumped 1.7 percentage points, making it the most-popular FM breakfast show on 9.5%, while Byron Webb’s drive show saw a 1.6 percentage point increase to 9.6%.
3AW held the title of most popular station overall, with a 0.8 percentage point gain in market share boosting it to 15.2% total. Despite a 0.4 percentage point drop for the station’s breakfast offering of Ross Stevenson and John Burns, they retained the most popular breakfast spot overall with 19.5%.
3AW Drive with Tom Elliott grew 1.9 percentage points to 12.7%, giving it the top drive spot overall, a title it has only taken on this survey. The show has been on the rise for the last few surveys, equalling Fox FM in the previous two.
Nova’s breakfast show with Chrissie Swan, Sam Pang and Jonathan Brown took a 0.1 percentage point gain from last survey to 7.6%, while Triple M’s ‘Hot Breakfast’ team of Eddie McGuire, Wil Anderson and Luke Darcy dropped 0.3 percentage points to 8.1%.
Nova’s drive team of Kate Ritchie, Tim Blackwell and Marty Sheargold dropped 1.0 percentage point to 8.5% overall, as Triple M’s Mick Molloy and Jane Kennedy fell 1.1 percentage points to 8.1%.
Behind 3AW in the AM stations, ABC dropped 1.1 percentage points in overall market share to 7.8%, while Macquarie Sports gained 0.1 to give it 0.4 overall.
Macquarie Sports also appeared in the breakfast slot this survey, with a 0.1% share overall, while ABC held 8.6% after a 1.5 percentage point drop from last survey.
ABC also saw a 1.1 percentage point drop in the drive slot, falling to 8.2%, while Macquarie Sports gained 0.6 percentage points to 1.1% after pulling just 0.5% in the last survey.
Kiis FM remained stagnant on 4.8%m while Triple M fell 0.7 points to 6.9%.
Great interest in radio results but always considered must show number of listeners by number as well as other information produced.
Percentages are noted as part of each rating, but does not reflect decline or growth of listening audience by numbers.
A twenty percent listening audience does not mean much or have much value if that total listening audience iequates to say, 80,000 for Melbourne/ Victoria.
SEN is a radio station that comes to mind with such low listening figures, information about listeners by number would severely challenge any business.
Not many people would know the equation of each perectentage point equates to a rule of thumb
number of listeners.
