Labor has named Michelle Rowland as its Shadow Minister for Communications, as questions hang over whether the government will be able to pass planned media reforms in a hostile Senate.

Rowland, the member for Greenway – an area of western Sydney bordered by Parramatta and Blacktown – had previously been Shadow Minister for Small Business and Citizenship and Multiculturalism.

She takes over the role from Jason Clare, who has been moved to the the Trade and Investment portfolio.

Earlier this week Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, himself a former Communications Minister, reappointed Mitch Fifield to the Communications Minister role.

While the Government is thought to be keen on passing a raft of media reforms which is had gone as far as putting before cabinet before the election was called, an increase in cross-benchers in the Senate with the likes of Pauline Hanson and Derryn Hinch could make that process difficult.

Former Communications Minister Stephen Conroy is handed the job of Shadow Sports Minister. Tony Burke is Shadow Minister for The Arts under Opposition Leader Bill Shorten.
