Myer Christmas campaign employs Aardman to save the Southern Cross

Myer has upped the ante with its 2016 Christmas campaign, bringing back Angel, Elf, Mouse and Reindeer in a mission to fix the Southern Cross and help Santa navigate his way to Australia.

Myer has brought back Elf, Reindeer, Angel and Mouse.

The campaign launched with a teaser two weeks ago where the stars of the ad were waiting inside a darkened box to be placed on the Christmas tree.

The full campaign launched over the weekend with Myer’s agency, Clemenger BBDO Melbourne, again reaching out to Academy Award-winning animation studio Aardman Animations, the creators of Wallace & Gromit.

In the latest ad, a mother reassures her child that Santa will be able to find their Christmas tree by using the Southern Cross to navigate.

But during the night the one of the stars falls to earth and shatters and the four characters set about saving Christmas by building a new star.

The campaign again runs with the line, ‘Where Christmas Comes for Christmas’, and the Myer’s executive general manager of brand and marketing, Michael Scott, said the characters had connected with shoppers in last year’s ads.

“Building off the success of last year’s campaign we have brought back our Myer characters in spectacular fashion,” Scott said.

“The campaign is big, it’s emotive and we hope it becomes well- loved too. Australia really embraced what we did last year, so this year we are determined to go one better.”

Clemenger has extended the campaign beyond the screen with the creation of an interactive storybook, The Story of Santa’s Star, which will be made available free through app stores.
