Nine and Fairfax to announce new streaming venture Stan today

Nine Entertainment Co and Fairfax Media’s new joint-venture TV and movie streaming service will be called Stan, Mumbrella can reveal.

Stan Law firm DibbsBarker, which represents Nine Entertainment, has taken out the trademarks on Stan and Stan.com.au in the video streaming space.

This morning the website went live in Australia, ahead of a press call at 9.30am with with popular comedienne Rebel Wilson, where it is expected the company will announce the launch date and content deals it has signed with major studios.

The website features a big picture of Breaking Bad character Walter White and allows people to sign up for a free trial. Text under the image says ‘Breaking Bad, Coming soon to Stan’.

The site also promises ‘No ads: No lock-in contracts’, ‘Stream TV and movies’ and ‘Unlimited access’. It is thought there will also be exclusive content created first for Stan.

The announcement comes as yesterday Mumbrella revealed the US streaming giant Netflix has signed up local creative agency Droga5 to spearhead its marketing push as it prepares to enter the Australian market.

Stan will be launched with a significant marketing push, after AJF Partnership was appointed to the creative account in September, beating out Droga in a pitch.

IP Australia records show DibbsBarker Nominees Pty Ltd holds the rights to the name Stan for all services involving: “On-line retail services featuring pre-recorded audio visual content; Advertising services including the provision of advertising space and the sale of digital advertising.”

It also has the rental rights in streaming devices, rental services for movies, and telecommunications space.

Earlier this year in an interview CEO of StreamCo Mike Sneesby told Business Insider: “In due course we will announce our consumer brand which is finalised, trademarked, URLs acquired and ready to go.

“All our branding and design of the websites and applications are all complete. We have a really exciting four letter brand.”
