Paul Kent launches legal action against News Corp

Sports journalist Paul Kent has launched legal proceedings against News Corp over his dismissal, following a late-night street fight in late April.

The NRL 360 host and Daily Telegraph columnist was “stood down pending an immediate investigation” after footage of the fight, filmed outside of the Totti’s restaurant in Rozelle, began circulating online. The Australian later confirmed Kent was dismissed by News Corp in early July.

Kent is challenging the termination with the Fair Work Commission, with the case “deal with contraventions involving dismissal” scheduled for a hearing in Sydney next week.

Kent pleaded guilty and was charged with one court of affray and placed on a two-year good behaviour bond, after attempt to dodge prosecution under mental health considerations.

Magistrate Jennifer Price said, of the leniency of the sentence, Kent “has come off significantly worse than the co-accused, having suffered quite severe injuries”, which included six broken ribs and a collapsed lung.

News Corp declined to comment.
