Perth takes flight amid Qantas partnership
Perth has soared into the global travel spotlight following its strategic partnership with Qantas, which has transformed Perth Airport (PER) into a crucial link for international travellers, especially from Europe.
According to ForwardKeys, the city has emerged as a dynamic centre for air traffic since the COVID pandemic, establishing itself as the fastest-growing city in Australia for air travel.
In 2024, PER has seen international seat capacity jump over 30% compared to the previous year, significantly outpacing the national average of 14%.
Domestic travel is also thriving, with an 8% increase in available seat capacity, further solidifying Perth’s status as a central travel hub.
The Western Australian capital has also seen an influx of European travellers spurred by Qantas’ new direct flight from Paris Charles de Gaulle.
This route has not only boosted the number of arrivals from France but has also increased premium cabin bookings, signalling a strong interest from high-value tourists.
The number of international travellers using Perth’s strategic west coast location as a gateway to other Australian destinations has also grown dramatically – and many extend their stay in Perth, proving the city’s ability to convert transit passengers into tourists.
ForwardKeys APAC VP of sales, Bing Han, said: “The outlook remains positive through December 2024. International arrivals are projected to continue their upward trend, with strong growth anticipated from key markets like Japan, the USA, and South Korea.
“The increasing number of couples, families, and groups choosing Perth as their destination underscores its diverse appeal and ability to cater to a wide range of travel styles.”
