Phil Gardner to leave News Limited

PhilThe Herald And Weekly Times’ editor-in-chief Phil Gardner is to leave News Limited.

In an email sent to  staff this afternoon News Limited CEO Kim Williams paid tribute to the long time News Limited stalwart.

In the email Williams writes:

“I write to let you know that Phil Gardner will be leaving the business.

“As I say in this media release, Phil has had a fine career at News Limited and made a significant contribution to our company over the 28 years he has been with us. Arriving from South Africa in 1985 with 200 dollars in his pocket he distinguished himself in a variety of roles in Melbourne and Adelaide before becoming editor in chief of Australia’s biggest selling newspaper, the Herald Sun.

“Phil has played a central role in the transformation program in Melbourne with the establishment of a single editorial dest and a seven day newsroom. He has been a constructive change agent in the business, broken some great stories and actively led our first digital subscription metro masthead.”

The major departure follows last week’s visit to Australia by Rupert Murdoch which also appeared to trigger a number of senior editorial changes at the company’s Queensland division.
