Public Interest Journalism Initiative welcomes new CEO

The Public Interest Journalism Initiative (PIJI), an independent group dedicated to advocating for public interest journalism’s sustainable future, has appointed a new chief executive officer.

Alex Cramb takes on the role with a wealth of experience in media and public policy.

His prior roles include senior press secretary positions in both the NSW and Federal Government, including for the Australian Labor Party and current Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

He also spent over a decade as a senior partner at GRACosway, advising clients in the defence, infrastructure, transport, and professional services sectors on public policy and communications matters.

His appointment comes at a pivotal time for public interest journalism, as PIJI has said it is working hard to navigate significant challenges and opportunities.

“I am delighted to join PIJI at this critical juncture,” Cramb said of his appointment.

“At a time when journalists and the media face unprecedented challenges –  from shrinking revenues to digital disruption – PIJI’s mission to support vital public interest reporting is more important than ever.

“Public interest journalism is essential to our democracy, and I look forward to working with the team to advocate for its long-term viability and impact.”

PIJI chair, Professor Allan Fels AO, said: “Alex brings extensive experience in politics, advocacy, corporate communications and journalism to the role as well as a strong commitment to the sustainability of public interest journalism.

“We are extremely pleased to have acquired the services of such an excellent person.”

PIJI has also welcomed the Federal Government’s recent commitment of $150 million to support public interest journalism.

“We look forward to a busy year tackling a range of policy issues and the ongoing challenge of the sustainability of public interest remains. Alex will make a difference to this,” Fels concluded.
