To The Establishment in Sydney where Roy Morgan Research was up against it as it launched its long awaited new newspaper sectional reading research.
With Mumbrella having run an event – just the one – at the venue itself (on that occasion the Mumbrella Question Time guests went without coffee after the machine broke down) , Dr Mumbo felt nothing but sympathy as Roy Morgan boss Michele Levine found that not only could the muzak not be silenced, but the PA was dead.
When the music was eventually switched off, the research organisation had to do its preso without microphones. Director of media services William Burlace told the audience: “They’ve lost control of the system. Unbelievable.”
And The Establishment had more to throw at the event. Much of the presentation took place to the backdrop of what sounded like a TB sufferer coughing up their lungs somewhere in a backroom which Dr Mumbo hoped was not the kitchen.
With about five minutes to go, The Establishment’s AV guy arrived carrying a portable speaker and microphone, meaning that at least the final few moments were loud and clear in beautiful mono.
Dr Mumbo suspects that RMR will be asking for a significant discount on its room hire.

While the loss of sound was less than fortunate and hardly what we expected, it appears it was caused by the inclement storms affecting Sydney at the time. Merivale have acted honourably in terms of adjusting the fee charged and, while we would have preferred otherwise, we found everything else with the arrangements to be excellent and thus bear them no ill will .
