Spotify encourages users to #PressPlayForPride with new channel

Music streaming platform Spotify is celebrating Sydney’s Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras with the release of a Pride channel #PressPlayForPride.

The channel aims to celebrate diversity and LGBTI+ artists from an array of genres and themes.

Playlists within the hub include Mardi Gras Party, Loud and Proud, #PressPlayForPride, Alternative Pride, Pride Classics and Fierce.

Artist Troye Sivan will be included in the #PressPlayForPride playlist which will also include commentary about his journey to coming out.

Spotify has been nominated for LGBT Company of the Year and Diversity Leader of the Year at Australia’s LGBT Awards.

Kate Vale, managing director at Spotify AUNZ, said: “Spotify is proud to be a company that champions diversity within its offices and the community. While there’s much more work to be done, we have a number of different initiatives to support LGBT+ rights within our company, our platform and our community, and we are thrilled to be recognised for our work in this space. We hope our staff and fans have a fantastic, safe and wonderfully colourful Mardi Gras.”

A spokesperson from the streaming company said: “For our product to be truly inclusive, truly reflective of our users, and different from our competitors, we wanted to show progressive leadership in this space. Providing the option for people who do not feel comfortable with, or who simply do not identify within traditional binary genders (male or female), was a no-brainer and was long overdue.”
