Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker takes almost $18m in opening weekend

The final Star Wars film in the Skywalker Saga and a culmination of 42 years of Star Wars movies, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, has taken $17.962m in its opening week across 1,056 screens, after securing an opening day of $6.41m.

That’s the lowest opening day of any of the three most recent films, Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Star Wars: The Last Jedi both beat it with $9.45m and $7.06m respectively, not including the spin-offs Rogue One and Solo.

The film still managed to easily top the weekend, knocking Frozen 2 off the top spot. The animated film took $2.809m for its fourth week of release, sitting above Knives Out which took $795,718 also for its fourth week. The films aired across 381 and 269 screens respectively.

Of the other animated films airing, The Addams Family brought in $762,952, and The Queen’s Corgi delivered $88,337. The new debuts for the week, Dabbang 3 and IP Man 4: The Finale, brought in $439,529 and $293,424 respectively.

Playing With Fire brought in $689,034 for its second week across 255 screens, a drop of 20% for the family flick starring John Cena. Last Christmas took $405,820, adding to a total of $10.338m across seven weeks, for seventh place, while Ford v Ferrari managed to nab tenth spot with $216,494 in its sixth week.
