Tax Office launches ‘is this fair?’ social campaign in bid to unmask tax dodging firms

The Australia Tax Office (ATO) is encouraging people to spill the beans on businesses they suspect of tax dodging in the lead up to the end of the financial year with a social media campaign asking “Be honest, is this fair”?

The ATO has launched a 30-second advert which depicts a wrecking ball destroying a cafe with the waiter angrily gesturing to the cafe opposite shouting: “She’s ripping us off again”.

The ad, created by Crouch Creative, shifts to the business across the road – named Cooking-the-books cafe – where a shifty woman has the option of pressing ‘fair transaction’ or ‘dodge tax’.

She chooses the later.

An ATO spokeswoman said the work is designed to “protect honest business”, with the campaign targeting catering, including cafes and restaurants, hair and beauty and building and construction.

“This campaign involves visiting businesses to provide education and assistance and conducting audits and reviews when we discover activities like tax evasion and hiding income,” she said.
