Telstra TV relaunches with free-to-air support and 4K streaming
Telstra has launched the latest iteration of Telstra TV, adding free-to-air and 4K streaming to its home entertainment product.
Originally flagged six months ago, the new product will be promoted in a TVC campaign produced by The Monkeys which will start airing on October 31.
Built around the 4K compatible Roku set top box used by a number of overseas providers, the new product is the second version of the Telstra TV which replaced the Tbox in 2015.
The company claims over a million Telstra TVs have been sold. At the time of the telco’s annual report, the company claimed 827,000 devices were in the market, up from 75,000 a year earlier.
“Telstra TV is a perfect example of how we can build software and service layers on top of our leading networks to provide new value and differentiated experiences for our customers,” Telstra CEO Andy Penn said in a media statement.
The new device will provide integrated search search across all free-to-air live channels as well as the five FTA catch-up services, Foxtel Now, BigPond Movies, Stan and Netflix.
Users will also be able to use the Telstra TV smartphone app to search for content and as a second remote control for the device, the company says.
Telstra TV will be available from October 31 as part of the company’s $99 bundle and is exclusive to Telstra Broadband Customers.
Probably the most important and innovative TV product launch of the year.
But it’s not cool, so won’t be a major part of the narrative.
Which is a shame.

I think this is already doomed; Fetch TV is a mile ahead of it before Telstra TV is even launched.

Chromecast Ultra. Or Roku Stick. Or Apple Tv. Or literally anything.

Not sure that’s true. Telstra has driven the penetration across its customer base (more than Optus, iiNet, Dodo) and for most broadcasters Telstra TV outrates Fetch TV in terms of consumer usage numbers…
