The Hallway wishes Australia’s advertising industry a ‘Merry Shitmas’

The Hallway has signed off the year with its ‘Merry Shitmas Christmas Card Collection’, poking fun at the “shitty” comments agencies receive on trade forum Campaign Brief.

“Every year ad agencies share their work on Campaign Brief. And every year their works gets roasted. Like a Christmas turkey,” the video reads.

Simon Lee, chief creative officer and partner at The Hallway, wrote on LinkedIn: “Introducing The Hallway’s ‘Merry Shitmas Christmas Card Collection’.

“From the bitterness, anger and sheer shittyness of comments posted about creative work in 2023 we’ve created a collection of cards that are brimming with warm wishes and goodwill.

“Guaranteed to soothe the most battered of advertising egos, warm the hearts of the coldest of cold-hearted commenters and delight your friends and families who’ll never understand quite how much your latest 6 second bumper really matters,” he wrote.

An industry campaign led by Innocean and Paper Moose, Drop The Shade, is currently arguing for the notoriously unfiltered comments section on Campaign Brief to be addressed, citing pervasive issues with mental health in the advertising industry.

It came after Innocean and Fck The Cupcakes staff, including CEO Jasmin Bedir, received death threats and vile comments on Campaign Brief for an International Women’s Day campaign. At the time of publishing, the story, and its 94 comments, remain live.

The preliminary findings from the Drop The Shade survey were revealed last month, with over three-quarters of respondents agreeing that negative feedback is impacting talent retention and discouraging new talent.

According to the survey findings, people in the creative space “don’t want to end the industry discourse, they just want it to clean up its act”.

80% of respondents had fed back or publicly commented on someone else’s work, with 58% doing it regularly (at least a few times a year). 57% think other people are mainly negative in their feedback, and 54% say they have been personally affected by the negativity.
