Telstra has made a major marketing appointment, naming The Leading Edge CEO Andy Bateman as its director of segment marketing.

Bateman has been CEO of the Enero-owned research and strategy agency for three years. Prior to that he was CEO of brand specialist Interbrand in New York.

He will report in to Telstra’s chief marketing officer Mark Buckman.

In the new role Bateman will be responsible for all customer segment marketing programs.

Buckman said: “It is terrific to attract someone of Andy’s caliber and experience to the Telstra Marketing team. Andy is well known to Telstra in his current capacity as CEO of The Leading Edge and has been instrumental in developing Telstra’s brand strategy, and new purpose and values.

“Andy has vast experience in marketing, branding, advertising and research, and will add a great deal of bench strength to our team.”

Bateman will be accountable for marketing across all customer segments including business, enterprise and government as well as Telstra consumer and small business marketing which was previously led by Maryanne Tsiatsias who has moved within the organisation to lead the Telstra Store network.

Bateman said: ““For a long time, my passion has been for the technology market with clients such as Microsoft, Intel, Adobe and AT&T. It is such a dynamic and influential area, essentially changing the way we all live and work.

“As a marketer, it just doesn’t get any better than to work in such a rapidly changing environment.”

Buckman and Bateman have both previously worked for McCann Worldgroup. Bateman was worldwide account manager from 2005 to 2007, where he ran Intel. Buckman was chairman and CEO of the Pacific Region from 2000 to 2003.

Bateman joins on November 1.

At the time of posting Enero had not responded to a request for comment on what Bateman’s departure means for TLE.

Enero’s agencies have seen a number of management changes in recent months, with several of them being brought together in the same building as the group’s main creative agency BMF.

Last month, the agency announced new leadership for its strategy agency Naked Communications with cofounder Adam Ferrier departing and Carl Ratcliff joining as CEO.

And earlier this year, Jeremy Nicholas was ousted as CEO of BMF, and replaced by Dominic Stinton.
