Tom Gleeson hosting revamped APRA Music Awards

There are new categories, an esteemed new musical director, and one of the country’s best comedians onboard the revamped 2024 APRA Music Awards.

The Most Performed Hard Rock/Heavy Metal category has been added to the suite of genre awards, with the nominees and winners determined by royalties earned from Australian performances of works across broadcast, digital downloads, streaming services, and live performances.

The Breakthrough Songwriter of the Year category has also been renamed Emerging Songwriter of the Year and is assessed by an independent advisory group, with the final determination of this award with the APRA Board of Directors.

“The introduction of the Most Performed Hard Rock/Heavy Metal category comes in response to popular demand from members and the music industry and has been created to acknowledge the significant commercial and cultural impact of the hard rock/heavy metal genres,” explains APRA chair Jenny Morris.

“The other change, which comes from re-thinking and refining the former Breakthrough Songwriter to Emerging Songwriter of the Year, emphasises that the recipients are in the process of establishing a foothold in the music industry, which is such a vital career stage to acknowledge.”

Gold Logie winner Tom Gleeson will host the evening, alongside ARIA-nominated artist Jen Cloher, and NIMA winner, Bumpy.

Julian Hamilton will take on the role of Musical Director for the evening. The Presets member won APRA Song of the Year in 2008 for Silverchair’s Straight Lines, and the following year took over APRA Songwriter for the Year with his Presets collaborator, Kim Moyes.

Hamilton will curate the live performances for the awards, finding Australian artists to cover the five nominated Peer-Voted APRA Song of the Year compositions.

Nominees across all categories will be announced on April 4.
