Tropfest founder John Polson to headline Unlock

Mumbrella can today announce Tropfest founder John Polson will take part in an exclusive conversation exploring how one of Australia’s most recognisable cultural exports is being reimagined for a new era.

As part of the Unlock program on 30 October, the session will look at the evolving role of live cultural experiences in a fragmented attention economy, and how digital distribution can extend their impact globally. It will also consider how new storytelling formats and creator-led platforms are reshaping the pathways for emerging talent.

After a seven-year hiatus, iconic Australian short film festival Tropfest will return in 2026 with government backing, a $100,000 prize pool, heavyweight board members including Sarah Murdoch, Peter V’landys, Rich Weinberg and Bryan Brown, and support from corporate partners including CommBank and YouTube.

Unlock, now in its second year, brings together senior marketers, media owners, agencies and cultural leaders to examine the value of live experiences in building brands and connecting communities.

The one-day event features keynotes, panels and case studies focused on partnerships, sponsorships and the commercial opportunities of the 24-hour economy. Unlock is co-located with Neon Forum and is proudly supported by NSW Government.

Early bird tickets to Unlock are on sale now.
