The Voice Kids pulls just 806,000 in first weeknight outing as Masterchef wins primetime battle

The first weeknight outing of The Voice Kids has drawn just 806,000 viewers for the singing contest, which features children competing for a recording contract.

The result, which sees the audience for the junior version of The Voice halve from 1.6m since its Sunday June 22 debut, will be a disappointment for Nine and comes just a day after the network’s head of reality TV vowed to refresh the adult version of the singing competition.

In contrast Ten’s Masterchef won last night’s 7.30pm entertainment battle with an audience of 1.128m while The X Factor had an audience of 1.079m in the same time slot on its first Wednesday audience according to the OzTam Overnight Metro Ratings.

Masterchef’s performance helped Network Ten overtake Nine in audience share on its main channel in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth.

Meanwhile the result for The Voice Kids is the worst audience and lowest commercial share for an episode of The Voice ever in total people and 25 to 54s. It also comes after criticism, including from their own Nine presenters, of the format for making children cry.

The show has been moved from its Sunday slot to make way for the next series of The Block: Glasshouse which kicks off this weekend on Nine.

In the news stakes Nine had the highest rating show of the night with Nine News drawing 1.181m for its 6pm shift and 1.078m for its 6.30pm slot, compared with 1.086m for rival Seven News in the 6pm slot and 997,000 in the 6.30pm.

Over on Ten the simulcasting of Family Feud on its three channels drew 647,000, down 10,000 viewers from last week in the 6pm slot while drama Offspring had 905,000, down from 981,000 last week.

Seven’s main channel had the largest audience share with 21.4 per cent, Nine had 18.0 per cent with Ten narrowly behind on 17.7 per cent.
