‘We wanted to deliver an experience Australia had never seen before’: Stan breaking ‘new ground’ with Olympics coverage

Stan’s coverage of the 2024 Olympics has not only been a huge win for Australian viewers, but the streamer as well.

Within a matter of days of Paris 2024 launching, Stan Sport scored its best-ever results; outperforming its previous highest daily minutes streamed record by a massive 24%. And it’s only gotten better since.

Speaking to Mumbrella, Stan CEO Martin Kugeler revealed that while day one saw a 24% uplift on its biggest viewing day, day two saw another 30% increase on top of that.

“Our ambition was with the Olympics to really break new grounds,” Kugeler said.

“We wanted to deliver an experience that Australia had never seen before. Australians are a very passionate sporting nation, and our focus from the start was how do we deliver a reimagined offering and proposition? It went beyond any viewing experience that was previously delivered in Australia.”

Kugeler said the high Olympics viewing numbers typically continue through to late into the night and then a second peak emerges at 6am when viewers are watching replays and highlights.

As well as 40 individual sports channels covering every event, eight live international channels are also available on the platform, marking the first time international channels, including non-English options, have been offered to Australia for the Olympics.

The international channels in particular have been a big success for the local streamer, with Kugeler saying one in seven Stan viewers are tuning in specifically to those channels.

The Stan chief added that he anticipates that the impressive Olympics numbers will only continue when the Paralympics kick off on 28 August and Stan screens all 549 events.

“I think the Paralympics will create additional stories,” he said.

“If you speak to Paralympic athletes, every story of a Paralympic athlete is extremely fascinating – the athletic achievement, but then also the background story of all the athletes.”

Outside of sport, Stan still have more big projects to come, including the final season of popular series Bump (now filming in Sydney) and a new comedy-drama series led by Saturday Night Live legend, Will Forte, which is currently in production in New South Wales.

Its latest Stan Original, Critical Incident, is set for release next week on 12 August.
