Westpac kicks off 200-year celebrations with ad from 1970s
Westpac Bank is celebrating its 200th anniversary by re-releasing an ad from 1977 on social media.
The ad, which appeared on Facebook this week, was accompanied by the caption: “When you turn 200 and someone finds footage of that thing you did when you were 160”.
The ad shows men and women dancing in front of the Westpac red ‘W’ to the song ‘Bank on the Wales’.
Martine Jager, Westpac’s chief marketing officer said the old ad “deserved to be reintroduced into the world”.
“We’re turning 200 tomorrow [Saturday] and when we looked through our archive, this ad stood out as a gem that deserved to be reintroduced into the world,” she said.
“We’re thrilled that people find it as entertaining and classic as we do. We have some pretty exciting work in the pipeline, so we’re not just going to be relying on one ad from the 70s on Facebook…there’s much more to come.”
DDB is the brand’s creative agency of record.

I’ve always maintained that with the importance of being remembered, there’s a huge space for using retro ads to target relevant aged audiences.
