Winner comes second at the B&T Awards
It’s the moment that every awards organiser (including Dr Mumbo) dreads… when the juror opens the envelope and reads out the wrong winner.
And it happened on Friday night when AIMIA boss John Butterworth stepped up to the podium at the B&T Awards and announced that the digital services category winner was… August.
Only they weren’t – they’d been highly commended. The winner was actually Boffswana. By the time the mistake was dealt with by presenters from The Chaser, the poor August representative was half way to the stage.
Happily, as the company became the standing joke of the night, August got far more publicity than it otherwise could have dreamed of.
Meanwhile another highlight of the event was the B&T winners book, where it became clear that wacky agency photos are back in fashion (as if they ever went away). They included:
- Droga 5, with the team turned round to face a giant image of David Droga’s forehead;
- Deepend, with an image of the team climbing down from a grassy bank after a presumably more formal photo;
- Naked, where noone was looking at the camera, and one of them was clutching an icecream;
- One Green Bean, with one of the team with his jeans round his ankles;
- Boffswana, with a computer generated sasquatch in the centre
Also, “Clemenger DDB” was announced as one of the winners

What about the PR agency of the year photo in the Book. He didn’t deem his 140 people pretty enough to make the pic. how odd.
(Though I see B&T have a pic of him with three others on the night of the awards. At least he invited some colleagues to the dinner.)

Much as I’d love to claim it was a complex plot to get August and Boffswana lots of mentions on the night at my expense, it wasn’t. Instead it was a total failure to follow a simple instruction (open envelope, read contents in full). Apologies were extended on the night to all involved.
Tim, I hope you’re coming to the AIMIA Awards in March, I missed your post-event commentary this year.
Cheers

I certainly hope to, John. Will there be a cameo role involving somebody sweeping the stage this year?
Cheers,
