Eleven of the best: World Cup ads

With the World Cup kicking off this morning we’ve wrapped up some of the best ads from around the world for your viewing pleasure.

1.  Nike Winner Stays

Jam packed with familiar faces, this spot celebrates all aspects of football from kids playing in the street and pretending to be their favourite player to fans celebration when their team wins. Created by Wieden+Kenndy Portland the spot was Nike’s second ad in its ‘Risk Everything’ campaign.

2. Adidas The Dream: all in or nothing

Focusing on the pressure of the game, this spot features Barcelona’s Lionel Messi alseep and the spot looks into his dreams where the pressure of the World Cup is depicted in beautiful, long, slow shots of Messi at practice and dealing with fans and media before the pace is picked up with game shots, creating a sense of the adrenalin the players experience during the game. It ends with the campaign tagline ‘All in or nothing’. It was Adidas’ launch spot for its campaign.

3. Beats by Dr Dre The Game Before The Game

Similarly to Adidas and Nike, Beats by Dr Dre draws on well-known footballers as it chronicles the pre-game rituals of players and fans alike. The five minute video features Brazilian star Neymar, Germany’s Mario Götze, Mexico’s Chicharito and appearances from Serena Williams and Lil Wayne. And for all of those out there paying close attention, it also has Apple product placement following on from Apple’s purchase of the brand.

4. BBC Sport World Cup 2014 Promo -Part 1

Promoting BBC Sport’s coverage of the World Cup, this ad steered away from use of generic game shots instead bringing to life a collection of football figurines of the pundits from the BBC, who decide to journey to Brazil to watch the games and for a chance to meet the “real version” of themselves.

5. Banco de Chile – The Miners

With Australia taking on Chile in its first match at Brazil 2014, Chile have produced an ad encouraging the team to win. It features rescued miners who were trapped underground for 69 days in 2010 who reunited to inspire the team to victory with these words of encouragement: “When Chile joins, impossible things start happening. Because Chile becomes more Chile when it comes to achieve a goal. Because NOTHING is IMPOSSIBLE for a Chilean!”

6. Adidas House Match

Here’s another great ad from official world cup sponsor Adidas, again featuring well loved football players including David Beckham, Zinedine Zidane, Gareth Bale and Lucas Moura. The two retired players are bored while watching the younger two play EA Sports’ 2014 FIFA World Cup video game and challenge the younger players to kick a ball around the house. The foursome proceed to trash “Beckingham Palace”, the home Becks used to live in with his family.

7. Coca-Cola One World, One Game

A beautiful crafted and shot ad from Coca-Cola, ‘One World, One Game’, Created by Wieden & Kennedy Sau Paulo, invites young people from around the world to attend the cup. Those invited include people from an isolated community in the Amazon, Ramallah in Palestine and those from the tsunami-ravaged area of Otsuchi in Japan. Full of slow panning shots of the locations and their communities, those invited talk about what soccer means to them and their community in the film’s narration.

8. McDonald’s GOL! FIFA World Cup – Brasil 2014

McDonald’s takes a lighter approach with its FIFA World Cup campaign. The spot features a variety of people from kids to grandparents to women in heels kicking a soccer ball around.

9. Powerade There’s Power in Every Game

Created by Wieden+Kennedy Amsterdam, the spot celebrates real players and their hard work and the determination it takes to overcome adversity and power through.

Powerade is the official sports drink chosen by FIFA.

10. Kia Let’s all be Football Fans

This ad starts with American Football practice. before Brazilian model Adriana Lima somewhat antisocially drives her Kia onto the pitch, and then breathily tells the players “in my country this if football”. In another she replaces all the sporting memorabilia from baseball to footy. Why not.

11. Adidas I Am Brazuca

Yes – even the matchball needs an advert these days. Let’s just hope it’s more popular than the much maligned Jubilani at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Follow the ball from training ground to beach to match day. More great skills on display.
