Curious acquires Cannes Grand Prix winner Reality

Curious Distribution has picked up Matteo Garrone’s film Reality which won the Grand Prix at Cannes Film Festival Competition.

The announcement:

Curious Distribution has announced the acquisition of the Cannes Film Festival Competition Grand Prix-winner Reality and Director’s Fortnight selection Granny’s Funeral.

Reality was acquired from Fandango Portobello and Granny’s Funeral from Wild Bunch.

Reality is written and directed by Matteo Garrone, whose acclaimed earlier film Gomorrah also won the Grand Prix at Cannes four years ago.  The film is a biting satire on reality television and Italian culture.  The film garnered strong critical reviews from Cannes.

Insidemovies said:  “(a)… visionary dissection of an Italian society….(Reality) ..is the rare movie that has some of that old, classic Fellini insanity in its overheated blood.”

Granny’s Funeral is delightful French comedy about love, life and death directed by Bruno Podalydès  and co-written by Bruno with his brother Denis Podalydès.  The brothers also star in the film.

Winning over the tough Cannes critics, Granny’s Funeral was described by Variety as “putting the fun back into funeral…hilarious” and by Screen Daily as “a contemporary French comedy with the potential to amuse audiences wherever it’s shown…glorious.”

“These two films reflect Curious’ on-going commitment to the distribution in Australia and New Zealand of quality, targeted films, and follow our success over the past two years with Norwegian Wood, Toomelah, Jiro Dreams of Sushi and Winter’s Bone and the upcoming Polisse, winner of last year’s Cannes Film Festival Jury Prize,” Curious Distribution’s Sarah Noonan said.

“Our 2012 slate also includes Miro Bilbrough’s feature film debut Being Venice, which has its world premiere this week at the Sydney Film Festival, The Other Son and Policeman.”

Noonan represented Curious Distribution at the Cannes Film Festival, with distribution consultant to the company, James Hewison.

Polisse is released in Australia on June 28.  Writer, director and star of the film Maiwenn is currently touring Australia to promote the film and is a guest of the Sydney Film Festival.
