Jennifer Spilsbury appointed editor of The Cairns Post

News Corp has appointed Jennifer Spilsbury editor of The Cairns Post.

The announcement:

News Corp Australia group director of editorial Campbell Reid today announced the appointment of Jennifer Spilsbury as the editor of The Cairns Post.

Ms Spilsbury, who was born in Cairns, joins The Cairns Post after twenty years at the Daily Mercury in Mackay. Starting her career there as a reporter, she held a number of roles including chief sub-editor, news director and deputy editor before becoming the paper’s first female editor in 2010.

Mr Reid said:  “I am delighted that a journalist of Jen’s quality and experience has accepted the challenge of editing The Cairns Post. She brings experience in all the crucial roles regional newspapers play in their communities as well as the true understanding of a born and bred local.

“I welcome her back to her home town and look forward to working closely with her.”

Ms Spilsbury said: “I’m very excited to be returning to Cairns. Having lived in North Queensland my whole life I know the things that are important to those who live here and take seriously the job of telling their stories. I look forward to working with the dedicated Post team and am excited about living in this vibrant community with my husband, Matt, and daughter Layne.”

Mr Reid added: “I am also pleased that with Jen’s appointment three of News Corp’s five regional daily newspapers are now edited by women.”

Ms Spilsbury joins Cath Webber, editor of the Gold Coast Bulletin and Rachel Hancock at the NT News as editors of News Corp Australia’s regional daily newspapers.

Ms Spilsbury starts in her new role on April 27.
