72andSunny officially announces Wesley Hawes as incoming chief creative officer

Independent agency 72andSunny has announced the appointment of Wesley Hawes as its new ANZ chief creative officer following news of his upcoming departure from Innocean on Tuesday morning. While it was originally reported that Hawes would join 72andSunny as ECD, Mumbrella can confirm he will take on the C-suite role.

Leading the agency alongside head of brand Laura Popa and president Ross Berthinussen, Hawes’ appointment comes at a time of momentum for the agency, having recently celebrated its 20th anniversary with new clients including BCF, MLC, Afterpay, and realestate.com.au.

It also comes after the agency’s ANZ creative lead, Genevieve Hoey, and ECD, Scott McClelland, departed earlier this year. McClelland originally replaced Luke Martin as ECD who moved to Afterpay as its global head of creative.

Hawes joined Innocean in 2020 following a restructure to help the agency transform into a “creatively-led, integrated communications offering grounded in data and insights”.

He helped lead the agency to some major award wins, including an inaugural ARIA adland award. He worked with clients including Hyundai and the Australian Marine Conservation Society. Prior to Innocean, Hawes spent time at CHE Proximity, Marcel Sydney, TBWA, BBH London, and more.

Hawes is also co-creator of Fck The Cupcakes – a gender equality organisation and brand that seeks to bring men into the equality conversation.

Off the back of this, he also co-founded Love Our Work, an initiative and industry charter designed to improve ‘creative feedback’ and raise editorial standards.

“We are thrilled that Wez is joining Laura, myself and the 72andSunny team in ANZ as chief creative officer, ANZ,” Berthinussen told Mumbrella.

“Our founding belief is a belief in optimism, in finding opportunity in any challenge, and Wez is the embodiment of that ethos.

“Over the last few years we have experienced incredible momentum and are looking forward to how he can help us build on that by fostering our collaborative, creative culture and delivering what we get out of bed for every day, radical, culturally led ideas that grow our client partners’ brands and business.”

Hawes will finish up at Innocean at the end of the year, and will start at 72andSunny in January.
