The Great Australian Spelling Bee ends on a high but cat videos hand Seven wins the night

Last night’s winner announced segment for Ten’s The Great Australian Spelling Bee saw 901,000 metro viewers tune in to see Victoria’s Anirudh, aged nine, declared Australia’s spelling champion.

The grand final portion of the show, which kicked off at 7.30pm, but came third in that time slot after it pulled in 755,000 metro viewers to hand Ten a main channel audience share of 15.2 per cent, according to preliminary overnight metro figures from OzTam.

That result, which was down on the show’s debut last month which saw 921,000 tune in, although the final ten minutes, broken out as the winner announcement, was the most watched non-news show of the evening.

Seven’s Cats Make You Laugh Out Loud 2 grabbed 870,000 metro viewers to win the 7.30pm timeslot. It was down on the original Cats Make You Out Loud which was watched by 917,000.

Nine’s The Block claimed second place at 7.30pm with a metro audience of 833,000 and was the most-watched show across the key advertising demographics (16-39, 18-49 and 25-54).

Seven won the night with a share of 18.6 per cent as Nine claimed second place with a share of 17.4 per cent. The ABC settled for a share 12.9 per cent.

In the 8.30pm timeslot, Seven’s local drama series Winners & Losers pulled in 713,000 viewers easily out-rating Nine’s Life Story which was watched by 508,000.

On the ABC, 7.30 was watched by 718,000 and Foreign Correspondent at 8pm was watched by 558,000.

In the news battleground, Nine News at 6pm grabbed 1.09m metro viewers, dipping to 1.044m at 6.30pm. Seven News at 6pm was watched by 1.03m, growing to 1.07m at 6.30pm.
