CHEP appoints Jonny Berger as managing partner

Clemenger Group’s CHE Proximity (CHEP) has announced Jonny Berger has been appointed as managing partner.

Berger joins from within the Clemenger Group, coming to CHEP from his position as general manager at Clemenger BBDO Melbourne.

Berger has previously worked at M&C Saatchi Australia as group head and Droga5 as group business director. Berger has worked with clients such as Carlton United Breweries, Optus, Ebay, and Woolworths.

Berger joins CHEP’s executive team in Sydney, leading the Samsung account. The appointment is effective immediately.

The appointment comes after series of people moves at CHEP. Chris Howatson and Ant White left CHEP late last year to form independent outfit Howatson + White. Enigma hired CHEP’s Emma Ashworth as group account director in January. Meanwhile, creative duo Matt Bladin and Phoebe Sloan were hired from CHEP by Special Group last month.

In the wake of Howatson and White’s departure, founder of With Collective Justin Hind was named CEO and Gavin McLeod was named national chief creative officer. In February, CHEP made nine hires to its data engineering team.

On the appointment, Hind said: “Jonny is a key senior addition to the agency management team. He is world class in every respect and it’s great to see him stay within the Clemenger family. His impact internally and externally will help shape CHEP further and we all couldn’t be more excited.”

Berger said: “I’m humbled to join the brilliant team at CHEP and focus my energy on an account with the ambition, potential, integration and scale of Samsung. There’s no other account like it in Australia and no other agency quite like CHEP.”

CHEP’s recent work includes campaigns for Genea Fertility, Aptamil, and Ebay.

Clemenger BBDO Melbourne Group CEO, Jim Gall, said the agency was “excited” for Berger to return to Sydney, “and to take the next step in his career within the Clemenger Group, leading one of our largest clients”.

“We’re looking forward to seeing all that Jonny achieves in his new role. We’ll be announcing his replacement in due course.”
