Fairfax staff ponder next move over subs axing
Fairfax staff are to meet in the next few hours to discuss their options after the company told them today that it planned to push on with its plans to make most of the subeditors on its metro titles redundant and outsource production work to Pagemasters.
Staff of the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age and their sister Sundya titles will meet at 4.30pm to discuss possibilities including industrial action.
According to journalists’ union the Media Alliance, the company has told staff the new arrangements will begin in seven weeks time.
A total of 82 jobs look likely to be lost including sub editors, graphic artists and designers.
The union said: “Management rejected a plan put forward by senior production staff which would have saved jobs and positioned the company for full integration across multiple news platforms.”

I love that people always complain about typos on these articles without recognising that it has fuck-all effect on the quality of the journalism or the popularity of the site.

I agree – to a point – with m. Minor typos, particularly on websites, are not a huge deal and don’t have a huge bearing on the relatively ‘quality’ of something. The problem is that Fairfax management seem to think that spell checking is all that sub-editors do, when it is so much more than that.
