Gravity continues its box office dominance

GravityThe Warner Bros distributed film Gravity continues to win fans at the Australian box office, topping the Motion Picture Distributor’s Association of Australia top 20 chart for the second week running. Gravity opened in Australian cinemas last weekend and took $3,546,776 across 469 screens. This weekend it made a further $3,201,681 on 233 screens. The reduction in the number of screens can be attributed to last weekend being a long weekend in several states.

The second highest grossing film at the local box office across at the weekend was the Sony distributed picture 2 Guns which made $1,542,255 on 258 screens. The film, starring Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg, tells the story of a DEA agent and a naval intelligence officer who find themselves on the run after a botched attempt to infiltrate a drug cartel. Also opening this weekend was the Princess Diana biopic Diana which made just $542,887 on 206 screens. The film has been subject to lukewarm reviews both here and abroad. Australian actress Naomi Watts portrays the late Princess.

Tim Winton’s The Turning continues to hold a position in the top 20 this weekend taking $112,055 across 19 screens. Although the number of screens increased from last weekend, the film made $50,000 less. It has made a total of $827,327 at the Australian box office.
